ABOUT DEPARTMENT

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

The First-Year Engineering (F.Y. B. Tech) Department at WIT, Solapur forms the backbone of the entire engineering program. Established with a vision to build a strong academic foundation, the department is committed to nurturing young minds by offering essential basic science courses that are prerequisites for all engineering disciplines. It aims to bridge the gap between basic sciences, humanities, and engineering to ensure a smooth academic transition for students.
The department helps students strengthen their fundamentals in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and environmental science while also emphasizing the importance of communication skills and interpersonal development. As a result, students are well-prepared not only academically but also professionally to face interviews, placements, and the evolving demands of the industry.

 Academic Excellence & Curriculum

The department conducts various academic and co-curricular activities including Orientation Programs and Induction Programs for newly admitted students. These initiatives are designed to introduce students to the academic structure, campus culture, and support systems available to them. The faculty team is a blend of experienced and young, enthusiastic educators who are dedicated to mentoring students and developing their technical and personal skills.

All laboratories under the General Engineering Department are well-equipped and continuously upgraded as per the latest curriculum and technological advancements. The department places strong emphasis on maintaining a high standard of teaching and laboratory training to support foundational learning.

Academic Planning & Evaluation

A detailed Academic Calendar is prepared at the start of each semester and shared with all students and parents to ensure timely implementation of the academic plan. It includes key dates for lectures, exams, events, and co-curricular activities. The department follows this calendar strictly for effective academic delivery and transparency.

For continuous assessment, three In-Semester Examinations (ISEs), Preliminary Exams, and End-Semester Examinations are conducted. Based on the performance, slow learners are identified, and remedial classes are organized to support their academic improvement.

The Book Loan Scheme provided by the department helps students borrow essential academic books for the entire semester, promoting self-study and academic excellence. Students also have access to journals, reference materials, and online resources to deepen their understanding.

Student Mentoring & Parent Engagement

Each class is supervised by dedicated coordinators such as Course Coordinators, Class Coordinators, Attendance Coordinators, Internal Exam Coordinators, Feedback Coordinators, and Mentors. These coordinators work under the guidance of the F.E. InCharge and the Principal, ensuring the smooth execution of all academic and administrative functions.

The department believes that continuous communication with parents is vital for a student’s development. Hence, Parent-Faculty Meetings are held every semester to discuss academic progress, attendance, behavior, and performance. Additionally, regular updates are shared with parents through WhatsApp and emails, including ISE results, exam schedules, academic calendars, and attendance status (shared fortnightly).

Visionary Leadership

The department functions under the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. N. S. Gramopadhye, supported by a dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching staff. The department aims at holistic development by combining strong academics with personality enhancement and life skills training.
